45mm Bulletproof glass being made in Mauritius 1985

New sales marketing name chosen by Jim Langlands, 30 years ago from 1976 to 1977, invented a simple easy method for
producing resin laminated safety and security glazing products with no machinery or heating/running costs.

UK Patent 1600847, US Patent 4234533, Canadian Patent 1135166 & others followed.
The resin, method & products were called Surlyt, pronounced sure light or sure lite.
Trade mark registrations UK 1077142, US 1266344, etc, etc.

You may not know this, but laminated glass has been around for over a hundred years.
The first laminates were cellulose nitrate cast-in-place laminates, produced around 1903.
Invented either by Edouard Benedictus in France or John C Wood In the UK (take your pick)
The laminates were called Triplex as was the UK company which manufactured them.
They were used for safety glass in vehicles, but they discolored in UV light.

After WWII laminated glass was normally made with pvb using expensive autoclaves.
Expensive? Yes, it can cost up to $10,000,000 for the autoclave, and equipment,
Why? PVB production requires a dust free temperature controlled production area.
Safety/security glass manufacture using pvb requires parallel glass surfaces.
The colour range is small and there are thickness limits, normally about 3" ( 75mm ).

Surlyt required no machinery and could be carried out almost anywhere.
Our adverts at that time said " Surlyt was as easy as 1, 2, 3,  "

Surlyt advantages, the Surlyt resin is user friendly, quick to measure / mix / pour & sets in a couple of hours. Surlyt:- Any pattern, any colour, any thickness, any security specification.

It has been said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But none of our imitators said that they had copied the Surlyt method. They all claimed that their ***lam or ****lam method was all their own.

Even those who copied a copy, or a copy of a copy. But none of them claimed to have developed it before 1980.

So, as the undisputed first, our internet marketing name is 1STLAM
